MARKO TAVCAR SELECTION

The Karst resembles a friend you think you know, almost a blood brother, who suddenly surprises you – with a flash, a shock – shocks you by revealing a new side, a mosaic of new facets.

Marko Tavčar is a small producer who courageously and stubbornly grows his own vines in the Karst, in Kreplje. His wines come from two white grape varieties Vitovska and Malvasjia Istriana and one red grape, Teran; Tavcâr cultivates a total of 2 hectares located between Kreplje, Dutovlje and Gorjiansko, all cultivated in the utmost naturalness and respect for the environment and biodiversity. And the same commitment is made in the cellar, where there is the “natural” conclusion of the previous commitment. Krepljie is suitable for whites: from a minimum of 60 cm of soil up to a maximum of 2 meters in certain places, with an unstable trend that creates a lot of diversity from plant to plant, where some produce more, others less, because where there is little land the limestone rock emerges – the “pokarbonata” – in which the

roots of Vitovska and Malvasia are wedged. Teran, on the other hand, requires a lot of land and clay to best express itself and is cultivated about 2 km away from Dutovlije and Tomaj. Another beautiful work by Marko is the one he has been carrying out for years now, in around 2000 m2 of land there are around 400 centenary ungrafted plants: we are in Gorjansko and this ancient farming system is called “liera”, traditional in the area, with large spaces between plant and plant and between rows and rows. Once upon a time, a lot of space was needed in the vineyard, as the crops were varied and as much space as possible had to be recovered. From this area comes his white Gorjansko.
Marko has alert eyes and an iron soul, an exact transposition into his wines. Truly special.
